WUSC Presents: Summer Jams

It is officially summertime and what better way to celebrate a fun season than throwing a playlist of songs together with that nostalgic summer vibe? I asked a few of the DJs to send me their favorite summer songs (memories included), and made a playlist! Here are some of the highlights:

“Horrorbeach” by Horrorpops
Submitted by DJ D
“Just a great little instrumental track that evokes the horror surf films from the ‘60’s from the bust psychobilly band around.

“GPS” by Durand Bernarr
Submitted by Ebony Dionne
“This song is very new but it just encapsulates the feeling of Summer. From the hint/splash of Latin music combined with his soulful vocals. It just reminds me of like something that would’ve dropped during the Summer of the early to mid-2000s.”

“Good Directions” by Billy Currington
Submitted by DJ Bish
“My childhood summers were soundtracked by aughts pop-country playing on our community pool’s radio. This song brings me back to my seven-year-old self, covered with a wet towel and eating Doritos after playing mermaids for hours on end.”

“Sky Queen” by Rose Rose
Submitted by DJ CeeJ
“This song very heavily reminds me of a disco-summer vibe. I can see myself rollerskating in California with this playing on a Walkman.”

“Same Old Ways” by Ama Lou
Submitted by DJ Trelle
“Looking through my YouTube playlist of 700+ songs I've saved over the past few years, I found this one. I forgot how much I would listen to this song. It was on repeat for months. Even with the music video being in a school setting, I always thought of it as a summer song. Listening to it years later, that thought hasn't changed.”

“It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” by Alan Jackson, Jimmy Buffett
Submitted by DJ Angel Hair
“Last summer I made it my mission to go to as many Margaritavilles I could and I made it to 4! So of course, I was listening to Jimmy Buffett all summer! My dad and I even sang it at karaoke together! RIP to a true king!”

Acolyte by Slaughter Dog, Beach
Submitted by DJ Ivy
“I think summer gives you time to reflect on growing up. I work with middle schoolers all summer, and I wish this song had existed when I was their age- I would have loved it. It’s the perfect light acoustic summer energy, with lyrics that symbolize happiness and frustration that comes with getting older.”

All these amazing songs and more will be linked in the playlist below! From everyone at WUSC, let’s jam, y’all!!

David Wood

An exploration into Goth, Darkwave, Deathrock, Post-Punk, Industrial, Horror, and everything else that goes bump in the night. It’s like if Halloween became a radio show. It's also one of the longest running shows on WUSC. Still undead and shuffling around after 25 years!

Anna Bishop

Hey y'all! My name is Anna and I am a junior studying Political Science and Spanish. This is my third semester with WUSC, and I have loved every second of it! When I'm not in the studio, I love hiking, reading, travelling, and listening to music. This semester, I host gone bishin', an eclectic, esoteric radio show in which I play everything from Americana to new wave to Latin American rock. Interspersed between these wonderful picks is a weekly "Today in Music History" segment and general ramblings about my life. Despite the name of my show, I have only been fishing once, and did not catch anything.

Ebony Robinson

What’s up y’all! My name is Ebony Robinson, and I’m from Columbia, SC. I’m an alumni DJ and have been with WUSC for going on 6 years (a lot of semesters). My show is Holla If Ya Hear Me with Ebony Dionne, and I love all things Hip Hop and R&B especially the old school. I also love the old Disney Channel movies and cult classics like The Last Dragon. If you’re a fan of all of these things, then you’ll definitely love and enjoy my show!

Evie Ellis

Evie Ellis is a junior computer science major with a minor in mathematics. She is from Nashville, Tennessee, and loves sudoku, hikes, friendship bracelets, and dogs! Since the beginning of college, Evie has hosted a show with Lily Ferguson, called Not Luce & Ivy. The content changes each semester, but she and Lily originally bonded over their love for Car Seat Headrest and Radiator Hospital. Last year, she served as the Station Manager, and she is so excited to be the Training Director this year!

CJ Rosenberger

Hi everyone! I'm CJ and I am a visual communications major with a creative writing minor. I am currently a part of the blog team so I am happy to answer any questions you may have about the blog or just WUSC in general!

Maddie Zediker

I am a P3 in pharmacy school from Naperville, Illinois. I love pop punk and covers and playing them on my show! Fun fact, I'm a Monster Energy ambassador so I get to sample Monster to all of the U of SC campus. I also have a little flame point siamese cat named Boo! Finally, I'd love to work for the FDA or CDC one day regulating drugs and keeping patients safe!
